The brewery was founded in 2011 by Eric McKay and Patrick Murtaugh and uses local Virginia ingredients in their beers such as the V.I.P.A. They also have highly rated beers with lots of interesting additions – Gingerbread Stout and Virginia Blackberry (Reserve Series). 1868 Strong Scotch Ale 10.3%
From an 1868 William Younger No 1 recipe, which in today’s terms would probably be labelled a barley wine. At the time, this would have been described as a Scotch Ale, an Edinburgh Ale, or simply (and pretty accurately!) as a Strong Ale. Weighing in at a hefty 10.3% Originally created by Younger’s in the 1850s, their No 1 “King of Ales” continued to be made for a full century, although it underwent many recipe changes throughout this period. Abbeydale and co have kept it as close as possible to the 1868 version of the recipe, with a few small amendments due to modern constraints.
